Mr Melia succeeds Mat Prosser, who has been appointed to the new position of head of strategic business development and transformation (Europe).

The new managing director comes from outside of the paper and recycling sector. He has more than 25 years of experience in the chemicals sector in a variety of posts involved with Tata Chemicals.  He worked originally with Brunner Mond UK, a supplier of soda ash, which was acquired by Tata Chemicals Limited in 2005.

DS Smith highlighted Mr Melia’s involved in manufacturing and process industries, “where he was responsible for leading complex multi-site organisations. Holding director-level positions in commercial, operations and business development functions, Melia also boasts expertise with companies spanning the chemicals and food sectors.”

Mr Melia said: “It was DS Smith’s commitment to shaping the future of the circular economy that really caught my attention. I am new to the recycling sector, but I firmly believe that the transfer of management skills can boost fresh thinking and innovation in any business environment. As such, my focus will be on applying my capabilities and knowledge to further drive DS Smith’s success.”

A key element of his work, said the company, “will be managing the UK collection, processing and supply of paper for recycling (PfR) within the context of DS Smith’s own closed loop recycled packaging model, as well as the supply of quality materials for recycling to its recycling partners across the globe.”

Mat Prosser

Former MD, Matt Prosser, had carried out changes within the business as it moved towards a circular economy approach as well as calling for improved quality on the collection front, aided by separate collection of paper at the local authority level.

Mr Prosser also oversaw DS Smith’s work to meet quality standards demanded by China for the ongoing export of used cardboard. He now takes on a Europe-focused role as DS Smith continues to develop its activities on the continent.
