Meacher warns Wastepack figures could jeopardise UK targets

Environment Minister Michael Meacher today said that Wastepack's actions have “let down the whole side” and could mean that the UK fails to meet its packaging obligations.

The Minister's comments follow his angry words yesterday over the “underperformance” of Wastepack, the second largest packaging compliance scheme, in meeting recycling and recovery targets under the Packaging Regulations.

Mr Meacher told letsrecycle.com: “If it was a marginal failure then it would not have been so bad but it was between one third and one half and that is a very, very serious shortfall.”

He added: “We are under a legal obligation. It let's down the whole side.”

Mr Meacher said that in light of the Wastepack figures, the UK could now fail to meet its packaging targets. He said: “I am not sure whether we are sufficiently above out target. We are around the 50% mark.” But he added that the UK is “very close to the target and we might still do it”.

Mr Meacher reiterated his desire to talk to Scottish ministers.
