About 85,000 homes currently have their paper and glass collected in two 140-litre bins each month, but the city council hopes to improve its current 15.26% recycling rate with wider access to the scheme.

Paper is collected in blue bins, with glass in brown bins, while a transparent sack is provided for the collection of cans. Vehicles are separated into different sections in order to take the materials separately.
More than 10,000 households were provided with the bins by the end of January 2006 in the North and East of the city. The new areas earmarked for the scheme expansion include Crumpsall, Charlestown, Higher Blackley, Moston, Harpurhey, Miles Platting & Newton Heath, Cheetham, Ancoats & Clayton and Bradford.
A further 75,000 households are also on the councils fortnightly collection scheme, which uses a box rather than the wheeled bin. The materials are then separated at the kerbside.

Councillor Paul Murphy, executive member for direct services, said: “The number of households using kerbside recycling following this latest roll-out of the service is very encouraging.
“All residents living in accessible and suitable properties will receive kerbside services as we look to increase the overall tonnage of recycled materials collected in Manchester,” he added.
The increased recycling by the city council will also help the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority – which disposes of Manchester city council's waste along with the boroughs of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford – to meet its future landfill targets

The Authority is currently procuring for a long – term waste management contract to deal with the waste. The contract is backed by 100 million of private finance initiative money and is expected to be the largest waste management contract in the history of the UK, valued at around 4 billion over 25 years.
Four companies are still in the running for the contract – Shanks, Sita, WRG and Viridor. Tenders are expected back by the companies in the middle of February and a preferred bidder should be selected in September this year.
