Emergency services were called to the incident in the traffic light area of Bridge Street in the city at 7.34am on December 31 2014.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed there had been a road traffic collision between a “bin lorry and a male pedestrian”.

Bridge Street, Castle Wynd and Church Street were closed for several hours following the incident.

The lorry belonged to waste management firm Northern Recycling Solutions Ltd, which is based just north of Inverness in Alness. Launched in 2007, the business is managed and owned by brother and sister team Ewan and Katie Calder.

The company said it was unable to comment on the incident while an investigation was underway.

An updated statement on the incident is expected from police services early next week.

Glasgow

The Inverness incident follows the deaths of six people in Glasgow who were involved in a collision with a council waste lorry in a busy shopping area of the city last week (see letsrecycle.com story).

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde police said investigations were ongoing into the Glasgow incident, and that the police would not be releasing the names of the driver nor the staff travelling on the vehicle at the time of the incident, in accordance with police policy.

Although eyewitnesses have reportedly described seeing the driver of the collection vehicle ‘slumped’ over the steering wheel moments before the crash, the exact cause of the collision in Queen Street has yet to be established.

Glasgow city council is expected to release an updated statement on the incident early next week.
