Police said the man was rushed to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham but died on Saturday of his injuries.
The operators of the site on Robian Way, Rainbow Waste, confirmed that one of its employees had died and said it was offering counselling to all those involved in the incident. The company is working with the relevant authorities, including the HSE, to investigate.
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Constabulary said: We got a call at 10.30am on Friday 7th June from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and attended a site on Robian Way in Swadlincote run by Rainbow Waste. A 24-year-old man had been injured and was taken to a local hospital, the Queens Medical Centre, where he was later pronounced dead. The HSE are investigating the circumstances.
A spokeswoman for the HSE confirmed that it was now leading on the investigation. She said: We visited the site on Friday and are arranging for specialist mechanical engineers to visit the site as the incident involved machinery.

Rainbow Waste is a family-owned business set up in 1998 and offers a skip hire and commercial waste collection service.
In a statement, the company said: Rainbow Waste can confirm that an employee has died following an accident at the companys Swadlincote premises on the morning of Friday 7th June 2013.
Rainbow Waste is working with the relevant authorities, including the Health and Safety Executive, to investigate the incident. The company has been in touch with the employee’s family to express its deepest condolences to his friends and family. At this difficult time our thoughts are obviously with his family and work colleagues. All those involved in the incident have been offered counselling.
Rainbow Waste takes its Health & Safety obligations very seriously. The events leading up to the incident are now a matter for investigation by ourselves, the Police and the Health & Safety Executive and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further whilst the investigation is ongoing.
