Paramedics were called to the scene at 8.10am on Monday morning (April 28) but the man, 50-year-old Adrian Turner, from the Wolverhampton area, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Turner was a lorry driver contracted to one of Sims Group's regular scrap metal suppliers. A spokesperson for Sims said he died following an incident while he was preparing his vehicle for unloading.
The Health and Safety Executive said it was aware of the incident but could not give out any information at this stage because of a police investigation.
A Sims spokesperson said: “Sims Group takes health and safety at work extremely seriously and has immediately commenced its own inquiry into the incident. The thoughts of everyone at Sims are very much with the deceased's next of kin at this time.”
The incident comes as the issue of health and safety gains prominence in the metal recycling sector. Only last month, the sector's trade association – the British Metals Recycling Association – of which Sims is a member, launched a ten point safety plan to tackle accidents and injuries.
According to the organisation, the main causes of accident and injury are: contact with moving machinery or material being machined; being hit by moving, falling or flying objects; slips, trips and falls; being hit by a moving vehicle; falls from heights and being hit by something fixed or stationary.
