The father-of-one from Burnley, who was found in the kitchen area, had suffered extensive head injuries and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Lancashire Police confirmed they had arrested a man on suspicion of murder this morning. He is currently being held in custody.

Police are interested in tracing Mr Whitehead’s movements over the weekend. He was last sighted in Burnley on Saturday (July 25) and had been drinking in two pubs in the town centre.

Investigation

Detective Superintendent Paul Withers, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said that a ‘large team’ was looking into the circumstances surrounding Mr Whitehead’s death.

He said: “We have a large team of detectives dedicated to this investigation and finding out exactly how Stephen Whitehead came about these injuries and the circumstances which led to his death.

“Specialist officers are supporting his family at this difficult time and I would urge anyone with information about this man’s death to please get in contact with us at your earliest opportunity.”
