London set for regional furniture re-use network

Next week sees the launch of a new regional organisation promoting the re-use of furniture in London.

The London Furniture Re-use Network will aim to boost the number of beds, wardrobes, kitchen appliances and other bulky items diverted from landfill in the capital.

” We will help to advance London boroughs further up the national recycling league tables. “
– Richard Featherstone, London FRN

Launched on Thursday by community organisations London Community Recycling Network and the national Furniture Re-use Network, the project is to co-ordinate the activities of 18 furniture recycling groups in London.

The organisation said it will raise the profile of furniture re-use and the re-use of electrical appliances. It will also aim to improve the facilities available for members of the public to dispose of their unwanted items, as well as providing employment and training opportunities in the sector.

Richard Featherstone, formerly manager of the Leicester SOFA project, will run the new scheme. Mr Featherstone has 12 years of experience in furniture re-use projects, and is a former executive member of the national FRN.

Opportunity
Mr Featherstone said: “We will help to advance London boroughs further up the national recycling league tables, and it will give us the opportunity to help disadvantaged families with much-needed furniture and kitchen appliances in their home.”

He added that the project was being set up “one step ahead of electrical waste legislation”, explaining that London FRN would help meet the requirements of the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.

The London FRN project has been awarded 285,796 from the national lottery – through the Community Recycling and Economic Development (CRED) Programme. It has also received match funding through the London Development Agency's enhance programme.
