London Remade appoints new chief executive

The new appointee is 53 year old Daniel Silverstone, who has previously worked across a number of public, private and not-for-profit sectors, most recently as chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality.

He finished this post in April and has since been working as a consultant. He will receive a six-figure salary and takes up his new position in October.

He said: “I am delighted and excited by this appointment and am very keen to broaden the appeal of London Remade's vital work to London and Londoners.

“Recycling is a huge challenge for the capital involving cross working relationships between all three sectors, public, private and not-for-profit.”

He added that this is a real opportunity to mainstream recycling into the core of London's business and public services.

In his varied career so far, the new leader has also managed a new local education authority in Hackney, and led London's largest public funder of voluntary action, London Borough Grants, between 1995-2001. He is a Tottenham Hotspur fan and lists jazz and tennis as his hobbies.

Commenting on the appointment, chair of London Remade, Colin Roberts, said that now is the right time to build on the strong foundations laid by Mr Carr-Harris, by making London Remade a household name in the capital.

He added that recycling needed to take centre stage and become a natural activity for Londoners at work, at home and in their leisure time: “We believe that Daniel's extensive knowledge of London's communities can help us to realised our vision to enable all sectors and sections of its communities to participate and work together to make London a world leading sustainable city.”

London Remade is a strategic partnership between the business sector, London Boroughs, regional government, waste management companies and the not-for-profit sector. It is funded, in the main, by London Development Agency regeneration funding.

The organisation's aim is to “revolutionise” the way London manages its waste through the development of a comprehensive recycling supply chain which incorporates the collection and reprocessing of recyclable materials and the procurement of recycled content and resource efficient products.
