Through a system of nappy vouchers, outreach work and advice developed during trials in the capital (see Letsrecycle.com story https://www.letsrecycle.com/news/archive/news.jsp?story=5936) , the organisations hope to reduce the 90,000 tonnes of nappy waste sent to landfill each year.
Speaking to letsrecycle.com yesterday, WEN's Kay Wagland said: “This is one of the biggest nappy schemes ever. Waste officers seem very keen and we anticipate a positive response.”
Vouchers
Under the new incentive scheme, due to begin in March 2007, up to 400 parents in each borough will be given 50 in vouchers to spend on washable nappies or laundry services. This will be combined with advice and outreach support, such as “nappuccino” coffee mornings.
The vouchers will cost councils up to around 20,000, whereas administration and outreach costs, to be managed centrally, have not been confirmed.

Ms Wagland said: “In trials around London we found that there was not one scheme that did everything, so we built something that tries to combine everything. It's a very good deal and the economies of scale make it as cost effective as possible.”
She added: “We want to make washable nappies a normal, popular choice, as opposed to disposable nappies. We hope the scheme will increase washable nappy uptake and have a big impact.”
