The LWARB investment part of the Driving up Performance Fund – is anticipated to provide new or improved recycling facilities to more than one million households in boroughs including Ealing, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Haringey, Havering, Hounslow, Islington, Merton, Lewisham, Redbridge, Sutton, Western Riverside Waste Authority and Westminster.
LWARB, which launched the fund for the capitals local authorities in September last year has so far funded 13 projects in total with each project awarded grants from 11,700 to 200,000.
The board originally expected to fund no more than 10 projects when the scheme was first announced (see letsrecycle.com story).
It estimates some 60,000 tonnes of waste will be diverted from landfill and incineration across the projects first four years.
The grants will be used to fund projects across the city, including the introduction of a new food waste collection services to residents in flats in Brent, and a mobile recycling centre in Westminster.
Meanwhile, Haringey will see a provision of reusable bags rolled out to 28,000 households in flats to store and carry recycling to onsite facilities along with improvements to signage at the facilities and revamping of 30-35 sites.
Other projects to be funded by the scheme include:
Ealing improvements will be made to their two household waste and recycling centres at Greenford and Stirling Road.
Bexley introduction of a dry and food waste recycling service to the 84 households on the Lesney Farm Estate. This will provide 100% of Bexley households in flats with a comprehensive recycling service.
Islington introduction of a comprehensive bulky waste re-use service to residents.
Merton introduction of food waste collections to primary and secondary schools in the borough.
Lewisham improvements will be made to the recycling service provided to 40,000 households in flats to improve performance and reduce contamination.
Boost
Commenting on todays announcement, Clyde Loakes, LWARB Efficiencies committee chair and board member, welcomed the fund as a significant boost to Londons recycling services.
He said: The Driving up Performance Fund will help 17 boroughs improve recycling facilities and boost recycling rates for over 1 million households.

Some residents will be able to recycle from their property for the first time, including food waste. This is a great step towards making it easier for residents living in the capital to recycle.
The successful schemes are expected to be rolled out by March 2015.
