Lewisham council extends Bio Capital contract

Lewisham council has extended its contract with energy company Bio Capital by another two years.

The contract will see Bio Capital continue to receive food waste from the council to be processed at its plant in Dagenham, East London.

The food waste will be converted into biomethane and biofertiliser for agricultural purposes.

Bio Capital said that the food waste it processed across the initial two-year period – from 2023 to 2024 – resulted in carbon savings of 3,123.97 tonnes CO2e.

Tom Hall, chief commercial officer at Bio Capital, said: “Bio Capital is excited to continue working alongside Lewisham council in this important project. The extension of our contract reflects the success of our collaboration over the past two years, where we have processed over 12,000 tonnes of food waste. We look forward to further supporting Lewisham’s sustainability goals and contributing to its recycling targets.”

Since the contract first started, Lewisham council has increased its food waste tonnage by 65%. This has included the successful implementation of food waste collection initiatives in 55 schools.

The council is planning on rolling out food waste collections to estates, private developments, flats above shops and local businesses over the coming two years.

Councillor Louise Krupski, deputy mayor and cabinet member for environment, transport and climate action said: “We are excited to continue our partnership with Bio Capital, whose dedication to sustainability is helping us work towards our goal of becoming net zero by 2030.

“This partnership plays a key role in boosting recycling in Lewisham, keeping food waste out of landfills, and turning it into clean energy. By working together, we are making real progress toward a greener future. This renewed agreement shows the success of our efforts so far, and we look forward to continuing to support our residents in making sustainable choices to create a cleaner Lewisham.”

Bio Capital has also sponsored the design and installation of vibrant vehicle livery on the food waste collection vehicles throughout Lewisham. The vehicles feature graphics and educational messaging designed to encourage more residents to participate in the food waste recycling and embrace sustainable habits.
