GK Serigraphics Ltd of Burley Hill Trading Estate, Leeds pleaded guilty at Leeds magistrates court this week to five offences of breaching the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations between January 1, 2000 and January 31, 2002.
The court heard how Environment Agency officers on a routine visit to the company’s premises in February 2002 found it was handling a substantial amount of packaging.
Further checks showed that the company was not registered with the Agency despite having exceeded the legal packaging and turnover threshold since January 2000.
The regulations state that companies with a turnover of more than 2 million a year who handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year and perform a packaging activity (or had a turnover of over 5 million a year and handled over 50 tonnes before 2000) must be registered with the Agency.
It was calculated that failing to register since 2000 had saved the company around 3,540 in costs including 1,640 in Producer Responsibility Notes.
