Lancashire trials plastic bottle recycling

Lancashire County Council, in partnership with LWS SITA, has installed a plastic bottle collection bank to assess the cost and popularity of plastic bottle recycling.

The recycling bank is being run as a trial by Lancashire County Council and LWS SITA, who manage the council's household waste recycling sites, to see how much of a demand there is for plastic recycling in Lancashire.

LWS SITA has installed the bank at the Farrington household waste recycling centre. The council is now urging householders to start recycling their plastic bottles and if there is sufficient demand and the bank proves to be cost-effective plastic banks will be introduced across Lancashire.

Councillor Brian Johnson, cabinet member for community and
regeneration, said: “We know there is a great deal of public demand for this service, with people keen to recycle their plastic bottles in particular. This trial will allow us to see just how much demand there is and find out if it is a cost effective scheme. As the County Council we are keen to offer the public the opportunity to recycle as much of their rubbish as possible at our Household Waste Recycling Centres and hopefully this scheme will be extended to more sites across Lancashire.”

The collection point will take plastic bottles and plastic milk containers. Once processed the recycled product will be used to make garden furniture and artificial surfaces.

Phil Procter, municipal contracts manager for LWS Sita, said:
“We are committed to offering the public as wide a range of facilities as
possible. By introducing this plastic skip at the Farrington site we are
building on the extensive range of facilities that are currently available
there.”
