Lancashire launches free compost bin distribution scheme

Lancashire County Council is starting an ambitious programme to distribute 100,000 compost bins across the county over the next three years.

Lancashire County Council in partnership with HDRA Consultants is rolling out the first stage of what it says is the largest compost bin distribution scheme in the UK.

By giving away 100,000 compost bins, the council aims to reduce the 15,115 tonnes of waste produced each week in the county.

The compost bins are made by Leeds-based Blackwall Limited from 100% recycled plastic and are being distributed along with a kitchen scrap bin for collecting fruit and vegetable peelings. Selected areas have been chosen to receive the first batch of bins and residents will receive a postcard over the next few weeks asking them if they want one.

Councillor Brian Johnson said: “It is good to see that Lancashire is leading the way in the UK in offering people the chance to compost their green and kitchen waste free of charge. This scheme supports the aims of a greener strategy for a greener future by encouraging people to see what they can do and helping them to take practical steps to reduce their waste.”

The project is supported by Lancashire County Council, LWS Lancashire Environmental Fund and the district and unitary authorities in Lancashire.
