Kirklees trials pay organics scheme for household and garden waste

Kirklees Council is trialling an organics collection scheme as part of a range of activities to drive up its recycling rate.

The council, reported its highest recycling rate ever last month at 14% has a target of 18.15% by 2001 and a rate of 60.4% by 2005 to include energy recovery and at least 27% of household waste recycling and composting.

The grey organics bins, with green lids, are being trialled in two separate areas of 300 households. The residents pay a 10 annual fee and in turn receive a fortnightly collection in the summer and monthly in the winter.

Rachel Wood, Kirklees environmental action officer, said the council was pleased with progress so far.

The council has already let a long term contract for handling the borough’s waste to Kirklees Waste Services, an arm of United Waste Services. The contract is a PFI initiative and will see the opening of a materials recycling facility and an energy from waste plant on the site of the borough’s former plant in Huddersfield using the same chimney stack.
