A potential 12,000 residents in Huddersfield and Dewsbury are being persuaded to swap their ordinarily 240-litre wheeled bins for a smaller capacity 180 litre bin in addition to a home composter, a kitchen sort bin and optional green bin in a bid to reduce the amount of waste they produce. However, once householders have decided to switch bins, they can not go back to using their original 240-litre grey bin at a later date.
Funding was made available from the first round of DEFRA’s 140m Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund, although the exact amount allocated to this particular scheme is yet to be confirmed.
The new bins will be allocated in two batches. The first batch of 6,000 bins will go out to residents that signed to the scheme before Christmas and will be dispatched to residents in the New Year. The second batch will go out to residents by February.
Commenting on the scheme, a Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: “This gives householders at least six months in which to hear about the scheme, and so it won’t just be us pushing the scheme, others will get to hear about it though word of mouth.”
Volunteering residents will be shown what they can expect the get for giving up their larger wheeled bins during specially organised recycling exhibitions to be held in Dewsbury Market Place on October 2 2002 between 10am and 3pm and Huddersfield bus station on October 4 2002 respectively.
Staff from Kirklees Council's Environmental Services will be on hand to talk about the new waste reduction package as well as the Council's new Municipal Waste Management Strategy, which includes options for Kirklees to improve recycling rates in the area over the next five years.
Cabinet member of Kirklees Environmental Services, councillor David Payne said: “One-off government funding has been given to Kirklees Environmental Services to provide volunteer households with a free extra green recycling bin, a home composter and kitchen sort bins in return for using a smaller grey wheeled bin every week. We would urge residents to act now if they want to take part.”
Volunteer residents who wish to take part the scheme can sign up for the offer at either of these exhibitions or alternatively call Kirklees Direct on 01484 414700 to register.
