Kent project helps find new uses for scrap materials in art and design

Kent county council reports that its Scrapstore project is helping in its fight against ever increasing waste levels in the county and the transfer of the service to the county's waste management unit at Aylesford has proved more successful than anticipated.

Originally opened in 1997 the Scrapstore’s mission was to supply play-schools with reusable paper and art materials that would have otherwise been thrown away. However during the last three years the operation has been widened and now provides materials to all avenues of craft, art and design for all ages.

Kirsty Bareham, recycling officer at the county councils, said that in Kent there are now more than 700 organisations, schools and individuals on the Scrapstore client register. She explained “Some visit the store just once a year taking huge amounts of materials away in school minibuses, and there are others who pop in almost weekly for the odd scrap items or just to talk over projects.

“Providing fun, educational activities, and much much more, Alan Heaver, Scrapstore Manager, can supply a selection of non-hazardous rubbish that can be transformed into anything by anyone with an imagination. Alan’s store is filled with monsters, milk bottle cats and dogs, musical instruments made from rubbish, robots and many other works of art, as examples of what can be achieved with imagination and cheap materials.”

Further information about the project is available from Mr Heaver tel: 01622 605950.
