Keenan invests £1 million into Welsh expansion plans

In expectation of upcoming food waste regulations in Wales, Keenan Recycling, a commercial food waste collection company, has invested £1m into additional services in South Wales.

The move is part of a broader £2 million spending initiative to support Keenan Recycling’s growth plans.

Supported by the Business Growth Fund, Keenan Recycling already operates in Wales, but its latest expansion effort will lead to the creation of up to 10 new job opportunities in the region. These roles will include drivers and sales positions, contributing to the local economy and labour market.

The company is also purchasing of 10 trucks as part of this initiative, each powered by “eco-friendly compressed natural gas”. With five of these advanced vehicles allocated to South Wales, Keenan Recycling aims to reinforce its commitment to “achieve a fully decarbonised fleet by the end of the decade”.

Managing director of Keenan Recycling Grant Keenan said: “This further expansion in Wales is an exciting step forward for Keenan Recycling as we continue our mission to provide easy and affordable food waste management to organisations of all shapes and sizes.

“With the upcoming legislation, it is imperative that we play our part in providing suitable services to ensure we can meet the growing demand for sustainable recycling collections.

“We are eager to bring more of our expertise, innovation, and dedication to food waste recycling services in the country, and we look forward to bringing more businesses along with us in this sustainable journey.”

Regulations

The decision to increase services and invest in environmentally friendly technology comes as the Welsh Government prepares to implement new regulations in April 2024.

Under these forthcoming rules, it will become legally mandatory for premises producing over 5 kilograms of food waste per week to recycle their organic waste. Keenan Recycling is strategically positioning itself to support businesses and local authorities in meeting these obligations efficiently and sustainably.

The plans were pushed back by six months to April 2024, in a move announced earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story).
