It has been announced that technology group Kanadevia Inova will acquire the Ireland operations of energy from waste (Efw) company Encyclis.

Encyclis runs and maintains the Dublin Waste to Energy Facility on a 38-year contract. It will continue to own 50% of the facility alongside its co-shareholders.

The acquisition will see a parallel contract signed for the annual capacity of the EfW site to be increased by 90,000 to 690,000 tonnes per year.

Around 60 Encyclis employees who are currently based at the Dublin plant will become part of Kanadevia Inova’s 3,200-strong workforce.

While the deal awaits approval, Encyclis will continue to operate the plant as it has for the past eight years.

Formal completion of the contract is expected to take place in the summer when the necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained.

Kanadevia Inova CEO Bruno-Frederic Baudouin said: “We are delighted to kick-start the process of transferring the operations and maintenance (O&M) Dublin team and their outstanding value-added expertise into our operations in Europe.

“Kanadevia Inova’s ability to increase plant performance at a fraction of the corresponding investment for a new-build and provide a guarantee through the O&M contract is a game-changer in the industry.”

Thomas Feilenreiter, executive vice president of systems and service solutions at Kanadevia Inova, added: “The team at Dublin WTEF is highly qualified and will bring new capacities and perspectives to our plant lifecycle offering.

“At Kanadevia Inova, we make the customer the hero of the story, and we firmly believe that with this deal, it is precisely our customers who will benefit in the long run.”

Dublin Waste to Energy Facility

The site is located on the Poolbeg peninsula and came online in 2017. Kanadevia Inova (then named Hitachi Zosen Inova) was the plant’s principal contractor for design, build and commissioning, while Encyclis was the developer.

The site currently processes up to 600,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually. It generates enough electricity to power 115,000 homes – which is set to increase after the capacity upgrades are completed.

The facility is a public private partnership (PPP) between Dublin city council (acting on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities) and three private entities: Encyclis, fund manager DIF Capital Partners and asset management organisation MEAG.

Continued UK Encyclis operations

Encyclis will continue to operate a fleet of energy recovery facilities (ERFs) in the UK – Rookery South ERF in Bedfordshire, Newhurst ERF in Leicestershire, Earls Gate Energy Centre in Scotland, Protos ERF in West Cheshire and Walsall ERF in the West Midlands. The Protos and Walsall ERFs are currently under construction.

Encyclis CEO Owen Michaelson said: “We have a long-standing strategic relationship with Kanadevia Inova, which has been responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of three of our operational plants and is currently working on a fourth.

“As a company, Encyclis is committed to continuous optimisation to deliver outstanding performance across our portfolio now and in the future. We work in a dynamic sector that requires constant consideration of new approaches and bold thinking.

“The strategic agreement we have reached with Kanadevia Inova has been carefully configured to provide employees at the Dublin facility and other stakeholders with certainty going forward.”
