JCB unveils latest model in Wastemaster line

Plant manufacturer JCB unveiled the latest in its Wastemaster range of vehicles with the launch of the ‘457WM’ wheeled loader at its global headquarters in Rocester, East Staffordshire, yesterday (July 29).

The newly modelled 457, which will be on display for the first time at RWM 2015 in September, is the first machine to feature JCB’s new cab structure, engine cover and rear counterweight design.

The newly designed cab features greater width and depth than in previous models, allowing greater driver comfort, a ‘panoramic’ front windscreen designed to improve visibility by up to 20% and a full colour tablet-style interface for ease of use.

On the operational side, the machine is powered by a 7.7-litre MTU Tier 4 Final engine, delivering a maximum power output of 193kW (258hp), up from 186kW (250hp) on the previous model.

According to JCB, the engine delivers increased output at lower rated engine revs, cutting fuel consumption, noise and emissions. The company claims that the newly-designed engine contributes to a fuel saving of around 16% compared to previous models, despite being the largest wheel-loading shovel available at JCB, weighing 22 tonnes. It has a maximum loader capacity of 3.5m3.

Waste

Tim Burnhope, chief innovation & growth officer at JCB, said: “Remarkable changes have taken place in the materials rehandling industry over the last 30 years. Step changes are certainly anticipated over the next three decades, especially in waste and recycling.

“Whether that be in less developed countries where landfill still dominates their waste process, or in more advanced territories that require additional equipment to service their expanding needs. This will inevitably produce massive opportunities globally to equipment manufacturers.”

The new machine also features a sloping one-piece engine canopy which can be electrically raised away from the cab to provide improved access to the engine and drivetrain for maintenance. The rear section can also be hinged away from the machine to provide access to the cooling pack, which features a swing-out hydraulically-driven cooling fan situated at the rear of the machine.

Elsewhere, the 457 also comes with JCB’s ‘LiveLink’ telematic system which provides fleet managers and owners with remote access to real-time fuel consumption and machine working data, including operating hours and fault codes.

JCB LiveLink also allows customers to set working hour curfews, outside of which the machine will not function, along with geo-fencing – which allows the owner to set a geographical area in which the machine can work, designed to prevent machines from being stolen.
