Although formal identification has yet to take place, investigators said they were satisfied that the cyclist was 40-year-old Henry Lang, who was airlifted to Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel with serious head injuries after the incident on Monday morning (July 21).
Separately, an incident in Sheffield on Monday resulted in an 18-year-old worker having an arm amputated after it got caught in a conveyor belt at a waste transfer station in Sheffield.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that it is investigating the incident, which occurred at the premises of skip-hire firm Yorkshire Wastecare on Monday morning (July 21).
Yorkshire Wastecare, of Station Road, Sheffield, also trades as the Green Skip Company [Editors note: Yorkshire Wastecare Ltd is not connected with the Wastecare Ltd business based in Leeds].
Cyclist death
Police were called just after 8am on Monday to reports of a collision between a cyclist and a waste vehicle on the Twickenham Road (A316) at the junction with Kew Foot Road in Richmond. London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance also attended (see letsrecycle.com story).
The victim, Mr Lang, from the Twickenham area, died on Tuesday afternoon. Metropolitan police said his next of kin are aware.
The police said the driver of the waste vehicle stopped at the scene and has not been arrested but that enquiries are continuing and witnesses being sought.
Neither the police nor the ambulance service have been able to name the company which owns the vehicle involved in the collision, but television reports from the scene on Monday, available to view here, shows a white, unbranded vehicle with a yellow being towed away. A spokesman for Richmond-upon-Thames borough council said that it was not a vehicle operating on behalf of the local authority.
Detective Sergeant John Hartfree, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Merton, said: The road would have been very busy at the time of the collision and I believe that a number of people would have seen the incident. Sheffield amputation
The 18-year-old man whose arm was amputated at the premises of Yorkshire Wastecare is recovering in hospital in Sheffield.
Firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue were called to the site on Monday after ambulance crews were unable to free the workers arm which had become lodged in the conveyor.
Cutting equipment was used in an attempt to extract the man, who has not yet been identified, but after over an hour of attempting to free him, the decision was taken to amputate his arm at the scene. He was then immediately rushed to hospital where he has remained since the incident.
In a statement, South Yorkshire Police, which: Police were called following reports of an industrial accident at a business premises on Station Road, Ecclesfield at 9.13am.
An 18-year-old man had suffered serious arm injuries. He was taken to hospital where he remains.
Further enquiries are being conducted by the Health and Safety Executive.
