Buckingham Palace officials have announced that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh plans to attend Futuresource 2009, the new joint ESA-CIWM waste and recycling conference and exhibition which is set to take place at London ExCel this June.

It was revealed yesterday (April 16) that His Royal Highness, who is an honorary fellow of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), is set to attend a private reception at the event, which is scheduled to be held June 9 and 11.

He is then expected to tour the exhibition and meet some of the 300-plus exhibitors to learn about the latest developments in sustainable waste management, recycling and resource efficiency.

Environmental Services Association (ESA) chief executive, Dirk Hazell, said: “We are all delighted by the announcement that His Royal Highness plans to visit Futuresource. We hope and believe he will see evidence both of a dynamic and ethical sector central to the UK's green economic recovery and of a brand new British sectoral event that can hold its own on a European stage.”

The major three-day conference, which replaces the annual CIWM Torbay event and exhibition, is being organised by the CIWM in partnership with the ESA.

Steve Lee, chief executive of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, commented: “The way we manage our wastes and resources has an important part to play in protecting the environment, conserving valuable resources and tackling climate change.

“We are honoured that His Royal Highness will be joining us to celebrate the innovation, expertise and skills that characterise this sector and to see firsthand the contribution it can make to a more sustainable future.”

The ESA and CIWM have also confirmed that a “record number” of overseas traders are set to attend Futuresource.

A spokesman for the organisations said that 14 countries are expected to attend the event, enabling delegates to “meet more overseas visitors than at any other trade show”.

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), the government organisation that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy, has arranged for delegations from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Brazil, Egypt, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, USA, UAE, Australia, China, India and Hong Kong to visit Futuresource 2009.

And, foreign delegates are set to get full access to the exhibition and dedicated briefing sessions on UK market opportunities including 'Meet the Buyer' events and a session covering the Olympics sustainability agenda with Olympics contractors and the Olympic Development Authority.

There will also be international sessions organised by the Austrian Trade Commission and the Swiss Embassy.

CIWM chief executive Steve Lee said: “At a time when many businesses are seeking new market opportunities, Futuresource 2009 will offer UK companies operating in the sustainability sector an unrivalled opportunity to make international contacts and boost their trade.”
