Household waste recycling sites in East Sussex recycle 31%

East Sussex's household waste recycling rates have reached 31% which show that the council is well on its way to hitting one of its recycling targets.

SITA, the council's contractor for the household waste recycling sites, has helped recycling rates to improve by introducing a series of initiatives which means that people can now recycle a wider range of materials at the sites including green waste, hard core building material and soil. Residents visiting the sites are asked to separate their waste and use the recycling facilities wherever possible. SITA's two-year contract with East Sussex County Council is worth 1.7 million a year.

The latest figures show that on average 30% of waste brought to the sites this year has been recycled and the council aims to recycle over 35% at the sites by 2003.

East Sussex County Council's lead cabinet member for transport and environment, Cllr Anthony Reid said: “We have to stop sending so much rubbish to landfill. After reducing the amount of rubbish we create or re-using it, recycling is the next-best way to dealing with it. We all have responsibility for the waste we create and residents are doing something practical to help make a difference.”
