Hospitality industry target of glass campaign

Glass recycling in pubs and clubs in northern England looks set to get a boost with 18 companies signing up to a new campaign.

The Have You Got the Bottle? drive is spearheaded by three northern-based recycling support agencies – Reycling Action Yorkshire (RAY), Renew Tees Valley (covering the whole of the north east) and Envirolink Northwest.

The campaign aims to reduce the amount of glass sent to landfill by the hospitality industry in northern England, which currently stands at more than 375 million bottles or 110,000 tonnes each year.

It will target 17,000 licensed premises across the region and Beverley Callard, landlady of the Rovers' Return pub in Coronation Street and real-life pub owner, will be the celebrity face supporting the drive.

Pubs and clubs will have to pay to have their waste glass collected but campaign organisers have said this is expected to work out cheaper than sending it to landfill, as the cost of doing so rises over the coming years.

Benefits

Campaign spokesperson, Ben Stone of Recycling Action Yorkshire, said: “The amount of glass sent to landfill in the north is huge. By recycling just one glass bottle you could save enough energy to power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour.

“Plus, going green is good for business. Customers are increasingly aware of, and interested in, environmental issues and are supportive of organisations who demonstrate that they care.

“Those who participate in the scheme will also experience significant savings. Landfill Tax is set to increase by £8 per year from April 2008, meaning bin lift charges for general waste will increase by around 20%. Participation in a recycling scheme represents a real opportunity to save money for hospitality businesses,” he said.

The campaign will send out leaflets and direct people to its website to get its message across. Hospitality businesses will be able to tailor the collection services to their own needs by contacting glass recyclers in the area who are supporting the campaign.
