HMRC will attend the second day of the event at the NEC, which runs from 16th to 18th September, in order to hear visitors’ thoughts on the test – which is due to become mandatory practice from April 2015.
Under the new rules, transfer station operators must ensure any waste load hoping to meet the £2.50 lower rate of landfill tax has a loss on ignition of 10% or less – or face being charged the standard rate of tax, which currently stands at £80 per tonne (see letsrecycle.com story).
A consultation on the proposals was launched in June and is due to come to a close on September 19 – meaning RWM will be the last chance for most operators to discuss the details of the LOI test in person.
A spokesperson for HMRC said: “The government announced in Budget 2014 a landfill tax change, specifically that it would introduce a loss on ignition (LOI) testing regime covering the residual waste (‘fines’) from waste processing at mechanical treatment plants by April 2015.
“We know that many businesses and individuals who may wish to comment haven’t yet done so, so HMRC will be attending the RWM event in Birmingham on 17 September, to give them the opportunity to discuss any concerns.”
Exhibitors
Meanwhile, a host of waste equipment specialists have also confirmed their attendance at RWM this year.
Organised in partnership with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), and supported by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), coordinators will welcome over 750 old and new faces to halls 4 and 5 of the NEC – the largest exhibition space in the UK.
One of the many exhibitors descending on the show will be Menart, which has specialised in composting technologies for over 20 years.
Menart offers a range of machinery for the production of compost form waste including shredders, windrow turners, screens, sorting lines and oversize compost cleaners. The firm will be showcasing its products at stand 5R104.

MachineX will also be at RWM this year, demonstrating its custom-built sorting equipment at stand 5S110. The company has designed and installed more than 250 turnkey facilities in partnership with MRFs in Canada, the United States, and Western Europe, offering solutions for a wide range of waste streams.
Weighbridges
Elsewhere, equipment provider Weightron Bilanciai Ltd will be drawing attention to its supply of weighbridges, weighbridge software, radiation detection systems and vehicle control equipment.
The supplier also provides industrial waste management system for facilities management companies, hospitals, office blocks and schools and universities. The team will be situated at stand 5T50.
Meanwhile, Sphere Professional UK will be on hand at stand 5V09 showcasing its recycled polythene and compostable potato sacks, as well as reusable woven PP sacks. The firm supplies to more than 100 councils and waste firms across the UK and Eire.
VEKA Recycling will also attend, a firm which offers cost-effective services for waste management companies to dispose of window waste. VEKA has PVC processing facilities in three European countries including a site at Swanscombe in Kent and a second recycling centre which opened this year in Birmingham. The company can be found at stand 4J30-K31.
And, Whitham Mills – one of the UK’s leading suppliers of balers, conveyors, and waste handling equipment for retailers and local authorities – will also be on hand to showcase its wares at stand 5-124-Q125. The firm also offers breakdown support and ‘outstanding’ service responsiveness.
Technology
Visitors seeking advice and updates on the use of technology, such as customer interfaces on mobile phones, can hear from ISB Global about the company’s SmartWorld solution. ISB provides ‘Waste and Recycling One’, an integrated business management software solution for small to midsize companies and the company will be on stand 4H62-J63.
AMCS Group meanwhile will also be launching its new MyBin365 app at RWM stand 4F80-G81, which enables domestic and commercial waste producers to receive ‘live’ updates from their service provider. Designed for smartphones and tablets, the app is also customisable for individual requirements.
