Hitachi Zosen Inova to bring Swiss AD technology to UK

Japanese energy-from-waste technology supplier Hitachi Zosen Inova has announced the acquisition of anaerobic digestion plant specialist Axpo Kompogas – a deal that will see the AD supplier enter the UK market for the first time.

Swiss-based Axpo Kompogas has designed and built more than 70 AD facilities in Germany, France and Switzerland, as well as in Doha, Japan and Martinique – but has yet to target the UK market.

Hitachi Zosen Inova has supplied the technology for a number of large-scale EfW plants in operation in the UK, including SITA’s Tees Valley plant, for which a third line was opened this month, as well as SSE’s Multifuel plant at Ferrybridge, which is currently under construction.

Expansion

The asset deal between Hitachi Zosen Inova and Kompogas will see HZI seek to expand the AD supplier’s brand beyond its existing markets. HZI claims that an increase in the volume of food waste that is now being separately collected makes it the ‘right time’ to invest in AD technology.

Commenting on the deal, Franz-Josef Mengede, chief executive of HZI, said: “The two technologies compliment each other ideally, generating energy from municipal residual and green waste respectively.

“Thanks to our global market presence and expertise in plant construction we will be able to offer Kompogas plants worldwide in the future.

“We are proud that in future we will be able to offer our customers the best of both thermal and biological energy from waste technologies.”

HZI will continue to market the technology under the Kompogas brand. Service and maintenance for existing Kompogas plants will be continued under HZI. Axpo’s biogas generation business will concentrate on operating its 15 existing plants in Switzerland.

Bettina Charrière, who heads Axpo’s new energies division, added: “We’re delighted to have found a new owner for our Axpo Kompogas Engineering AG plant construction unit in the shape of HZI.

“Under HZI, Kompogas Engineering AG’s technological expertise in the construction of biogas plants will be able to continue developing and evolving while Axpo focuses on its core competence as leading executer of biomass plants.”
