The five-year deal kicks off in January 2003 and will involve around 50 staff to handle the day to day running of the sites. The plans also include incentives to boost recycling rates and the intention is to expand the materials that can be recycled at the sites.
Commenting on the deal, which runs alongside a 25-year contract the company has to run eight of the sites, Onyx contract manager Tony Miles said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and to continue the management of eleven HWRCs. We are proud of the way we have managed the contracts to date. We have competed successfully with four other companies to demonstrate our ability to fulfill the contract in as efficient and cost effective way possible.”
Hampshire has a total of 26 household waste recycling centres, which recycle around 70,000 tonnes of material a year – around half of which comes from the eleven Onyx sites.
