The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Government, Tung Chee Hwa, and a number of his senior ministers were briefed by the Environmental Services Association this week when they visited the UK. Recycling was high on the agenda which covered a range of waste management issues and included a tour of the Grundon materials recycling facility at Colnbrook, near Heathrow Airport. The official website of the Hong Kong Government commented as follows:- “Mr Tung was briefed on environmentally-friendly techniques and technology used by the waste management industry. Environmental Services Association chief executive Dirk Hazell told Mr Tung there were a number of strict laws in place, or being introduced, within Europe to remove or reduce a reliance on primary resources and to stipulate mandatory recycling levels. These recycling levels applied to a wide range of products including packaging, batteries, hazardous waste, electronic devices and even motor vehicles. Later, the Chief Executive visited the facilities of S. Grundon (Services) Limited, the largest privately-owned waste management group in Britain.” Pictured are (left)

During a briefing which highlighted best practice in UK waste and resource management, Mr Hazell noted how the industry was changing.

He said: “Future generations will see this period as one of fundamental change in both public and corporate decision making, with environmental considerations taking a central role. As the World's economy grows, dependence on primary resources and release into the environment of complex and toxic chemicals must fall.”

– The Environmental Services Association ESA is the sectoral trade association for the UK's waste/resource management industry which accounts for about 0.5% GDP (more than 4 billion per annum).
