Griffiths Waste Management has secured £2 million in funding from the Development Bank of Wales for a new materials recycling facility (MRF) in Swansea.

The family-owned business, part of the Gavin Griffiths Group, said the investment marks a significant step forward in its operational capacity, with the new facility expected to substantially increase recycling throughput and improve material recovery rates.

Construction of the new plant is nearing completion, with the MRF expected to become fully operational in 2026.

Gavin Griffiths, Managing Director of the Gavin Griffiths Group, said the investment represented “the next stage in the evolution of our business” and reflected its long-term commitment to sustainability, innovation and the circular economy.

He commented: “We recognised some time ago that the future of waste management lies in recovering more materials, reducing landfill and producing higher-quality recycled products that can be reused within industry. This new facility will allow us to do exactly that.”

Swansea MRF to process 200k tonnes of waste

Once operational, the MRF is expected be capable of processing up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, an increase on the 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes currently handled at Griffiths Waste Management’s existing Swansea facility.

The company said its current plant has reached practical capacity limits, restricting throughput and the amount of third-party waste it can accept.

The new site will feature advanced automated sorting systems designed to improve material separation, lower contamination levels and increase the volume of recyclable materials recovered.

Griffiths said this would enable a greater proportion of waste to be marketed as high-value secondary commodities, while reducing the amount of residual waste sent to landfill.

The project will also safeguard 41 existing jobs and create additional skilled employment opportunities as the business expands.

Green Business Loan Scheme

Financial due diligence on the deal was carried out by Rhys Jenkins and Chris Thomas of SME Finance Partners.

The funding, provided through the Green Business Loan Scheme, forms part of a wider multi-million-pound investment package that also includes support from the company’s own group funds and a Welsh Government grant.

Sally Phillips, Investment Executive at the Development Bank of Wales, commented: “The new facility will significantly increase recycling capacity, reduce landfill dependency and support the creation of a more circular economy, while safeguarding skilled jobs and creating a platform for future growth.”

The Green Business Loan Scheme, funded by the Welsh Government and the Development Bank of Wales, offers discounted interest rates and long-term capital to support businesses investing in energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects across Wales.
