Greenstar packaging scheme expands into WEEE compliance

Irish-owned waste management company Greenstar has announced that it will be expanding its packaging compliance scheme to cover the WEEE Directive.

The company, which is already working on waste electronics producer responsibility in Ireland, has said that its Recycle 1st scheme will be offering its services to producers of electronic equipment when the Directive comes into force next year.

” We will us our existing links from the numerous local authority contacts we already operate to collect domestic WEEE “
– Mike Scollick, Greenstar

As well as experience through its packaging recycling work, the company has been collecting electronic waste for the past four years. It has also developed its own box and cage systems for collecting any kind and amounts of electronic waste.

The WEEE Directive is expected to be transposed into UK law by January 2 2007, which should see it lay before parliament in the next few weeks. Under the current timetable, companies obligated to cover the cost of recycling electronic waste must be registered with a compliance scheme by March 15.

Greenstar's compliance scheme will provide collections for those companies obligated to pick up electronic waste, in the run up the start of producer responsibility it will also provide information and advice on companies' obligations.

Mike Scollick, Greenstar's environmental affairs director, said: “We will use our existing links from the numerous local authority contacts we already operate to collect domestic WEEE and meet the recycling obligations of our members.

“Greenstar is the market-leading recycling led waste management company with extensive collection operations throughout the UK for all types of WEEE. We will be able to build onto the back of these operations and offer an all-inclusive service to cover every aspect of compliance with the WEEE regulations,” he added.

Blue Peter

Greenstar has been chosen as an official agent for the annual BBC Blue Peter Appeal – this year called the Blue Peter Shoe Biz Appeal, in aid of UNICEF.

The scheme aims to collect shoes from across the UK, which will be recycled by Greenstar.

Money raised will go towards helping UNICEF's work with orphaned children affected by HIV and AIDS in Malawi.
