He said the recycling industry “desires parallel commitment from Government when it comes to the necessary permissions and approvals” and urged the Government not to “delay projects while every shade of opinion is considered”.
Speaking in the letsrecycle.com opinion section, the chief executive pointed out that while the world's “global warming clock” was “ticking inexorably towards midnight”, arguments were blocking developments such as new recycling facilities which could go a long way to cutting carbon emissions.
Mr Wakelin said that Britain must embrace new recycling and energy-from-waste technologies to shrink its carbon footprint, but that these technologies must be “allowed to happen” and we need to act “quickly”.
He added: “We shouldn't allow any further delays if vital infrastructure is to help slow the minute hand on the global warming clock.”
Greenstar operates five materials recycling facilities (MRFs) across the UK and runs an integrated recycling-led waste management service. It also operates one of the largest MRFs in the country, its Aldridge site in the West Midlands has a capacity of 300,000 tonnes.
