Players from across the waste sector came together last week (April 17) for the competition which saw DHL Envirosolutions, runners-up twice before, take the title from 2014 winners Powerday, with a strong performance from the four man team of: Simon Potter, Ashley Smart, Chris Brown and Karl Tulip. This was despite stiff competition from Powerday, who lost out by a single point. Refuse Vehicle Solutions came in third.
On the individual front, Dawn Camplin of CHC Waste Facilities Management won the Individual Female title, while the Individual Male Winner was awarded to Simon Harris of Hanbury Plastic Recycling.
A total of 28 teams of four competed in what has become the industry’s premier event and is now in its fifth year.
Challenges
The Masters of Waste traditionally features a range of other golf challenges and fun activities throughout the day. These included a Wheelie Bin Challenge, sponsored by Taylor Bins, which saw competitors attempting to chip the ball into the bin. Andy Walsh from Rugby borough council was this year’s winner.
The prize for the Nearest the Pin award, sponsored by Biffa, was also won by Simon Harris of Hanbury Plastic Recycling. Meanwhile the Longest Drive, sponsored by Grundon, went to Jim Malia of CNH UK Ltd. Ceris Burns International sponsored the straightest drive which was amazingly shared between Paul Baker of Baker Waste Services and Dawn Camplin.
The annual event, now in its fifth year, was organised by letsrecycle.com and raised funds on behalf of the Child Bereavement Charity, with final donations reaching £1,880. The funds will go towards the charity’s work in supporting families and working with education professionals.
Trophies
The evening was rounded off with the trophy presentation and handing over of the Masters of Waste Green Jackets. This year’s prizes were presented by Grundon Waste Management chairman Norman Grundon, and the entertainment was delivered by comedian Arron James.
