The Darlston-based company runs a nationwide operation, collecting lead and non-lead acid batteries from public and private sector organisations across the UK.
Soon to embark on a major expansion programme, which will see a new plant opened in West Bromwich by the end of March (see letsrecycle.com story), G&P; recognised that it would face a major problem recruiting new drivers and so decided to fill the gap with its own training programme.
Growth
Michael Green, managing director of G&P; batteries, said: “Whilst our fleet is relatively small, we are envisaging major growth for the company in the next couple of years as new legislation means that non-lead acid batteries will also have to be recycled.
“As part of our planning process for this expansion we recognised that we need additional qualified drivers and decided to fill the shortage by creating our own academy. Not only does it offer progression for our young workforce, it also ensures that all drivers have the correct knowledge when driving with hazardous waste products on board,” he explained.
G&P; transport manager responsible for training and compliance, Derren Stokes, will be in charge of the academy and is currently training four young drivers, David Williams, Nigel Cysterm Rob Holmes and mark Binns. The four men have entered the programme from other jobs within the company.
Qualify
Mr Stokes, who has been with the company six years, said: “To qualify for the programme all participants must have a full car licence. They must also pass a medical with the Vehicle Operator Services Agency before receiving their LGV provisional licence.
“Depending on ability, it can take anything from a matter of weeks to a few months to become a qualified driver. The training is a mixture of theory and practical, invoking a refresher course on the Highway Code, hazardous goods training, safe loading, an understanding of driver's hours and finally practical driving in a variety of road conditions,” he added.
Academy trainee Mr Williams has been with the company for 18 months and he saw a career opportunity in joining up. Mr Williams said: “I started with G&P; as a driver's mate and it is great to get the chance to train for my LGV licence.”
