Good results for commercial in-vessel plant in Glasgow

Operations at a new in-vessel composting facility run by Scottish Water Waste Services are going well, the company has said.

The Deerdykes Composting and Organics Recycling Facility is situated in a disused Wastewater Treatment Works near Glasgow, and was opened in March this year.

Designed by consultants Enviros, the facility has the capacity to process 45,000 tonnes a year of both green waste and waste from industrial and commercial customers.

Donald MacBrayne, Scottish Water Waste Services waste services manager, said: “After three months of operation we have found the system to be very reliable and simple to control. We are receiving a lot of interest in the site and the system from customers, regulators and the waste management industry.”

The Enviros design consists of four concrete composting tunnels, fully equipped with computer controlled in-floor aeration system. All blowers, ancillary equipment and the biofilter are placed on the roof of the tunnels to save space and allow future site expansion.

Accreditation
Scottish Waste Water Services achieved PAS 100 accreditation for its plant this April, and the certified compost product is being marketed as “POD Soil Booster”.

The company is now in the process of obtaining approval under the Animal By-Product Regulation to allow it to compost catering waste.

The Deerdykes facilty is the second Enviros-designed in-vessel composting facility in the UK after the plant in Beddington in the London borough of Sutton. Both facilities were built by Ascot Environmental.
