They are part of an order of 28,000 bins that will be delivered by supplier Schaefer over the next four weeks.

The bins have been provided through a 604,000 grant from the Scottish Executive’s strategic waste fund. If Glasgow receives more money from this in future, it hopes that the wheeled bins will eventually replace the 40,000 green boxes used at present for recycling.
Environmental protection convenor Willie O’Rourke said that residents were giving “excellent support” to recycling initiatives.
Glasgow has 91 public recycling sites, and a further 40 in schools, and plans to increase this total. It collected 2,806 tonnes of materials from these in 2001-02. The council operates the Polmadie materials reclamation facility, the largest of its kind in Scotland, which has a capacity to handle 25,000 tonnes of paper, plastic, cans and cardboard. The main recipients of these materials are Alcan, Corus and Shotton Paper.
Glasgow forms part of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Area Waste Strategy Group, through which it works on recycling initiatives with neighbouring councils and takes in materials from some of them.
