‘From strength to strength during challenging times’

Tim Gent, director of glass recycling company Recresco, reflects on how the company has made the most of a challenging year.

This year has been one like no other bringing unprecedented challenges business leaders could neither have anticipated nor prepared for.

Despite this, we have not only endured the pressures presented by a difficult year but continue to push forward with an ambitious development strategy to secure the company’s long-term future.

Investment has been made at both our Cwmbran and Ellesmere Port locations with the latter site being purchased by the company from Peel Ports in a multi-million-pound deal in September of this year.

Developments within the organisation cover a number of core areas including safety, product, workforce and customer experience with commitment to state-of-the-art technology playing a central role.

Security

An IT security upgrade was recently installed across the business incorporating a state-of-the-art cyber security defence system to protect the organisation against potential attacks which are becoming ever more sophisticated. With safety front of mind the company also contracted ZoneSafe proximity warning systems as part of its ongoing commitment to enhanced safe working practice and to reduce the potential for vehicle/pedestrian collisions and related accidents all too common within the recycling sector.

Following a comprehensive procurement and testing process, significant investment was made into market leading plant technology to increase operational efficiency and deliver high quality cullet, particularly from MRF glass.

The purchase of Sesotec’s K9 optical sorting system made it possible for us to sort glass from co-mingled kerbside and HWRC collections in a more efficient way and has already increased the volume of material able to be processed at Ellesmere Port. The company also purchased three Impact Air Systems’ Zigzag Air Classifier (ZAC800) separation systems, enabling enhanced removal of fibre, dust and plastic contamination.

Other investments have been made in enhancing customer experience with improvements to the entrance to Cwmbran depot, internal modernisation of office space and meeting rooms and the purchase of a company vehicle to provide customers with site visits around Ellesmere Port.

Success

We have enjoyed notable success this year in spite of the challenging climate, securing a number of long term contracts with local councils, Knauf Insulation and Encirc while also successfully achieving grant funding from the Welsh government. We enter the new year with a renewed emphasis on quality in all areas of the business, with continuing upgrade plans at both sites, a focus on staff development and a converted company van providing a remote quality control unit when sourcing material from suppliers.

We have certainly felt the effects of an extraordinary year while observing changes in the market no one could have expected.

As a well-established business having been in operation since 1978, our experience of the industry has helped us to ensure we are able to act quickly in times of crisis. We are proud of the achievements of the business and of our workforce who have continued operation during difficult times.

The investment in our business combined with contract wins put the company in a strong position to take on future challenges. By investing in state-of-the-art technology to deliver enhanced product to our customers and support the safety of our workforce, we are confident Recresco will continue to go from strength to strength in 2021 and the years ahead.
