Four “near miss” councils share 2m from Defra fund

Four English councils have been awarded 2 million to improve recycling and waste management services for residents, Defra announced today.

The borough councils of Bedford, Great Yarmouth and Rushcliffe as well as North Kesteven district council, have been approved money from the third and final round of the National Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund, which is also known as the “Challenge Fund”.

” If residents embrace the scheme we can achieve results we can be proud of. I'm confident that residents will do just that. “
– Elliot Morley

Full funding details for the councils are as follows:

  • Bedford borough council will receive 1,094,370 – 355,030 in 2004/05 and 739,340 in in 2005/06.
  • Great Yarmouth borough council will receive 687,600 – 223,470 in 2004/05 and 464,130 in 2005/06.
  • North Kesteven district council will receive 226,180 in 2005/06.
  • Rushcliffe borough council will receive 578,718 in 2005/06.

The councils were “near misses” when the full third round of the 225 million fund, announced this time last year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Defra said the grants for the four councils would lead to the diversion of 25,000 tonnes of household waste from landfill.

Announcing the awards, environment minister Elliot Morley said: “The funding of these schemes will contribute towards our highly challenging national target to recycle and compost a quarter of our household rubbish in 2005/06.

“But, it can only work with the enthusiasm of residents; if residents embrace the scheme we can achieve results we can be proud of. I'm confident that residents will do just that.”

Funding
Round three was the final round of bidding for the Challenge Fund, but the fund is being replaced by the Waste Performance and Efficiency Grant (WPEG). This has a total fund of 260m running for three years from 2005/06.

Instead of a bidding war, every council with waste responsibilities is to benefit from the WPEG funding. Grants will be non-ringfenced and will form a reward for good waste management performances.
