The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority announced in July that it had a short list of four companies to bid for its integrated waste management contract, backed by 100 million of private finance initiative credits and expected to be worth 4 billion over 25 years.

Shanks, SITA, Viridor and Waste Recycling Group are the four remaining companies. Onyx were originally short listed but were removed from the running in the July announcement. GMWDA has said that with such a large contract it doesn't want to involve a waste management company in the running any longer than it needs to.
This week a letter will be sent to each of the four companies, officially asking them to submit tender documentation by the end of January 2006.
Next stage
Tim Judson, director of procurement at GMWDA, said: “Once the submissions are returned we will hope to select two bidders to take forward to the next stage in May next year. Hopefully a preferred bidder will be appointed next September with the contract being closed in March 2007.”

The Greater Manchester Waste Authority is aiming to stop the growth in the generation of household waste among its 958,000 households, and with new waste processing infrastructure in place is hoping to raise recycling and composting rates to 50% of household waste.
The contract would cover households in the boroughs of Bolton, Bury, Manchester City, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.
