Food waste collections rolled out in Ceredigion

Weekly food waste collections have started to be rolled out across Ceredigion in West Wales today (November 15) as the county council introduces a number of changes to its in-house recycling service.

Kitchen and kerbside food waste caddies have been distributed to 30,000 homes, building on a successful 18-month trial in Aberystwyth in May 2009. The caddies have been supplied by Haydock-based manufacturer Coral Products Plc.

Alongside this service, residents will receive weekly collections, using clear bags, of paper, card, cans and plastic for recycling, while residual waste will be collected once a fortnight. Previously this waste was collected weekly.

The days on which waste is collected from many areas will also change following a study into route optimisation which recommended more efficient collection routes.

The introduction of the revamped service comes ahead of a Welsh Assembly Government requirement for every local authority in Wales to recycle at least 52% of their waste by 2012 (see letsrecycle.com story). At present, 47% of waste in Ceredigion is recycled, but the council claims that it could have to pay
