If there is one word that captures 2013, it has to be partnership. It was partnership that resulted in the creation of Resource Efficient Scotland, the one-stop-shop which aims to help organisations realise a share of the 2 billlion of potential savings available from the efficient use of energy, water and raw materials.
And, it was partnership that saw Zero Waste Scotland collaborate with a wide network of associates such as SEPA, COSLA and the Federation of Small Businesses to help get Scotlands private and public bodies ready for the Waste (Scotland) Regulations which come into force on New Years Day 2014.
As a result of this joint working we have managed to deliver a successful communications campaign which has seen training sessions held the length and breadth of the country; a high profile marketing campaign featuring in the nations newspapers, online and in the news, with a range of practical tools launched to help organisations get ready for the Regulations.
Message
The message has been clear and consistent throughout. All key waste materials – paper, card, plastic, metals and glass – must be separated for collection for recycling. Additionally, all food businesses, which produce over 50kg of food waste per week, must present it for separate collection, unless they are located in a rural area.
Ive been hugely encouraged and impressed by the commitment and innovation shown already by organisations throughout Scotland. There is an entrepeneurial spirit and inherent pride in doing the right thing which underpins the shift towards becoming regs ready. The best partnerships rely on people working together and as we move into 2014 Im confident this ethos will carry us towards a brighter, more prosperous and resource-efficient future.
