Fire broke out at the site at around 6.15am on Saturday (13 August) morning. Approximately thirteen pumps from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and a number of specialist appliances attended large fire in a recycling plant on Station Road, the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.
The fire involved 700 tonnes of waste material, and crews used main jets and created a fire break using on site machinery to contain the blaze, and numerous relief crews attended the incident.
The fire is still burning over 72 hours since the blaze started.
Conditions
A spokesperson for the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service told letsrecycle.com: “Crews are still turning over and damping down, with two fire engines and a high volume pump in attendance.
Fires at waste and recycling facilities will be under the spotlight at letsrecycle.com’s one day Fire Prevention and Control Conference at London’s QEII Centre on 9 November. Click here for more details.
“Crews are also keeping the surrounding risk area cooled with water, and firefighters are expected to be on site until Thursday. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service continue to work with the site operators, the Environment Agency and King’s Lynn Borough Council.”
The Fire Service also stated there is no risk to the public.
A spokesperson for Glazewing told letsrecycle.com: “We had two piles of materials that were alight, one was a wood pile of only about 50-60 tonnes. The other was a waste pile. The fire started in the wood pile and went over to the waste pile.
“The fire is still burning today. [The fire service] expect it will be burning until Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the weather conditions and the wind.”
Cause

The spokesperson added that there is no indication as to what started the fire, and investigators on site yesterday “came up with nothing.” There are no signs of foul play, he added.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has claimed it is too early to determine what caused the incident.
The site primarily functions as a scrap metal yard, but also contains a waste transfer station, where the fire is thought to have started. The scrap metal operation was not affected but has been closed, and expected to reopen later this week.
Nobody was injured and employees were sent home. Residents were warned to keep windows and doors shut.
