A major “deep-seated” fire at the Ladybank Waste Facility in Fife has been burning for six days, with operations expected to continue “for some time”.

Two fire appliances and one height-vehicle currently remain in attendance.

The site is operated by Scottish waste management company Cireco.

Area Commander Lee Turnock, Local Senior Officer for Clackmannanshire, Fife and Stirling at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “While the fire is now under control, this remains a complex and protracted incident due to the deep-seated nature of the fire and the volume of material involved.

“People in surrounding areas may continue to notice smoke coming from the site as firefighters carry out damping down pockets of fire.

“We would ask residents to follow public safety advice, including keeping windows and doors closed and limiting time outdoors where smoke is present.

“I would also like to thank the local community for their patience, understanding and support while firefighters continue working to make the area safe.”

The blaze broke out at the waste transfer and processing facility near Lower Melville Wood on the afternoon of Tuesday 12 May.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the site at approximately 1.35pm after reports of a fire.

The incident involved recycled material and waste which was spread across an area measuring approximately 200m by 300m.

The initial response included 12 appliances and specialist resources, with more than 60 firefighters involved.

There have been no reported casualties.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. Authorities said a review will take place once the emergency response has concluded and it is safe to access the affected areas.

The waste transfer and processing facility has sustained significant damage and remains closed while emergency services continue their work.

It is not yet known when waste processing operations will resume.

Although the Household Waste Recycling Centre located across the road was not damaged by the fire, it remains closed because road access has been restricted by smoke and emergency service activity.

Fife Council said bin collections are continuing as planned and residents should continue to present bins and bulky uplift items as normal.

Residents have raised concerns about waste piling up at nearby Lochhead landfill, which is also operated by Cireco.

Additionally, the neighbouring community council has reportedly raised concerns over a lack of communication during the ongoing incident, as smoke continued to affect the surrounding area three days after the fire first broke out.

Officials said further updates would be issued as more information becomes available.
