The message came from Dominique Pin of SITA, when he addressed delegates to FEAD's annual conference in Bruges.
Mr Pin said: “The great distress and unease that prevails in the economic world and after recent terrorist attacks should not be allowed to push back concerns for environmental measures.”
The FEAD president warned against any temptation to delay environmental progress and said that some industrialists are already asking for them to be put back.
Mr Pin also hit out at complexities in interpretation of the European Waste Framework Directive. He pointed to a decision by the Italian authorities to allow some scrap materials not to be deemed as waste where they are reused in the same or in another process with or without pre-treatment.
He said this created a double standard in the way waste materials could be handled and a “double market for the same scrap”.
Mr Pin called for a consistent and responsible attitude in this area.
