It will use recycling and mechanical biological treatments at one site on each half of the county, which are still to be chosen from among six proposed.

The north/ south split arises reform a best practicable environmental option appraisal.
This concluded that it would be a better for both environmental and financial reasons to follow this arrangement than to copy the three-way split geographical used for waste collection, which will continue.
The six sites were identified in the waste local plan for Essex and Southend adopted in 2001.
They are: Sandon, Chelmsford; Rivenhall, Braintree; the former North Weald airport; Courtauld Road, Basildon; and Stanway and Hythe in Colchester.
Waste advisory board chair Michael Talbot the two-area approach marked “a good step forward in our waste strategy”.
He added: “Our strategy will not work without residents in the county continuing the brilliant efforts to recycle as much as possible.”

Essex announced in July that it had achieved a recycling rate of 29.8%, up from 24.9% the previous year.
The county has set itself a 33% target, which exceeds that imposed by the government, and to achieve this it must recycle an additional 22,476 tonnes.
