Mr Dennis is also a board member and former president of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and will leave ESA on December 31, when a new executive director is set to be appointed.

Following his retirement from ESA he will continue to be involved in the sector through his on-going work with the CIWM, which retains a close allegiance with ESA having on Thursday announced the creation of ‘Resources & Waste UK’ (see letsrecycle.com story). The organisation is intended to provide a ‘stronger voice’ for the waste and resources sectors.
Mr Dennis began work in the waste industry in 1963, in his family business – the Deard’s Group – based in North London – as a manager, and subsequently as director. During this time he was also active on behalf of the SME’s Group working in the industry.
In 1993 he joined NAWDC the National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors – the predecessor to the ESA – firstly as executive director, then as commercial director. He then moved to the position of deputy chief executive in 2000 – a position he held for 10 years. In 2010, Mr Dennis became director general at ESA, the role from which he will retire at the end of the year.
Relationships
Commenting on the announcement, ESA chairman, David Palmer-Jones said: “Barry’s role throughout his time at the ESA has always been to represent the industry in a professional way, and build relationships from which we can benefit.
“Our links with CIWM have been strengthened through his involvement, and the successes of his work in the arrangements we now have for the RWM Exhibition, held at the NEC in Birmingham every year, is one example of many that we have of his dedication to the industry.”
He added: “I would like to wish Barry the best of luck in the future, and look forward to crossing paths with him in the future.”
According to ESA, Mr Dennis has played a pivotal role in changing the face of the waste management industry and has helped the Association become more distinct – as well as having a focus on key topics including waste crime and infrastructure investment.
CIWM chief executive Steve Lee, added: “CIWM wishes Barry the very best on his retirement from ESA. He has served the waste and resource management sector long and well and we are very pleased that he will continue to do so through his involvement with CIWM.”
