ESA backs use of mobile incinerators in Foot and Mouth fight

The Environmental Services Association today welcomed in principle proposed new government powers to facilitate use of Air Curtain incinerators in the foot and mouth emergency.

The association says that landfill is a safe disposal route for sheep and pig carcasses but it believes the cleanest possible incineration at sufficiently high
temperatures is the appropriate route for cattle carcasses in the current
emergency.

“In place of the pyres, we have consistently argued for
accelerant-aided incineration which is likely to burn much more cleanly and
consistently to reach temperatures high enough to ensure full destruction of
the BSE prion if present,” comments ESA chief executive Dirk Hazell.

He added: “Air Curtain incinerators are mobile and appear to offer a relatively clean technology which can achieve 1000 degrees centigrade. In current circumstances, these mobile incinerators would appear to be a useful tool, particularly in Devon, to help to deal with the emergency local to the point
of cull. ESA supports the government's wish to secure emergency powers to enable these incinerators rapidly to be brought into service.”
