The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said there was a lack of good non-technical information for young people interested in the sector.
The guide was written by people engaged in environmental work and has many case studies.
The institution said that employers are having difficulties in recruiting suitably qualified staff in certain areas.
And it has estimated that more than 80 per cent of environmental graduates are not currently working in the sector.
Each chapter of the guide lists the main employers, salaries and career opportunities in fields including waste management.
The institution's executive director Nick Reeves said: “Many young people who are committed to improving the environment cannot find employment in the sector because they are not being helped with their career choice at an early stage, and this is a great loss.”
