Ms Clayton said: “It’s such an honour to be recognised for the work I have absolutely loved doing for the last 40 years. The environmental crime, enforcement and intelligence work we do often goes unrecognised so it’s amazing that this area of our work is being acknowledged.

“I genuinely hope it will help to inspire the continued efforts of those I work with, but also encourages a new generation looking to make their contribution to improving our environment.

“I have had great support from colleagues and many enforcement partners which has helped give me the opportunity to grow, innovate and pioneer new techniques to reduce, prevent and pursue environmental crime.”

Keith Ashcroft MBE

Awarded an MBE for “services to the environment”, former Area Director at the Environment Agency, Keith Ashcroft said: “I’m so very proud to have been nominated for this Honour.

“It was a privilege to have had a long and varied career and to have led three areas through some exciting and incredibly challenging times.

“Having started my environmental career as a waste inspector with Lancashire County Council I’ve been fortunate to work with some great colleagues on strategic waste issues from illegal waste to shale gas right through to nuclear waste management.

“This was never more so than during major flooding when we saw the Cumbria and Lancashire Team, supported by lots of EA colleagues, deal with the extreme and unprecedented events affecting hundreds of communities and thousands of homes and businesses.

“I’m also immensely proud of the partnerships we created to protect and improve our fabulous part of the world. So, this isn’t just an award for me – this is an MBE for Cumbria and Lancashire and #TeamEA!”
