The new facility will be designed in line with the highest health and safety requirements

The firm proposes to build a new development at the former Corus site on Spittlegate Level, on the outskirts of Grantham town centre.
The compay was devastated by the loss of its state-of-the-art £2.1 million plant at Houghton Lane (see letsrecycle.com story), and has since been considering how to bounce back, with senior staff seeking potential new sites.
Environcom has now revealed that if it secures planning permission, it will invest £10 million in equipment for the new facility, which, it promises, will meet high standards in both performance and safety.
Among the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) the firm plans to recycle or reuse at the new facility will be televisions, computer monitors, vacuums, microwaves and both fridges and freezers.
Jobs
If opened, the firm hopes the new site will also offer jobs to more people than the 100 who were previously employed at the company's site prior to last year's fire.
The firm's technical executive, Jeff Weeks, said: “The new facility will mean that
Environcom can again become one of the town's largest employers and we anticipate creating around 150 jobs for people in the local area.”
He added: “The new facility will be designed in line with the highest health and safety requirements and measures such as CCTV will be introduced so we can monitor the site at all times.”
“Recycling, sustainability and environmental protection remain within the portfolio of our key objectives at the facility.”
Application
In a statement, the company also sought to highlight the fact that the new location is away from residential areas, after the September 2007 blaze led to the evacuation of residents near to the Houghton Park site, and near to the A1.
The planning application for the new WEEE facility was received by Lincolnshire county council on February 25 and registered on March 4, with a decision on the Environcom proposals expected to come in late May 2008.
